Pompei
Much bigger city than I had imagined, with 70 percent unearthed so far. This tragic city was buried under 15 feet of pumice after the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD.. We had a wonderful 3+ hour tour by our expert guide. She brought the ruins, and the 30.000 citizens who tragically lost their lives to the eruption of Mt Vesuvius, briefly back to life for us. They all died horrible suffocating deaths, no chance for escape, with 5 deadly stages to eruption.
.
Most of the amazing artwork, including sculptures, were secreted to a museum in Naples for protection. Too much of antiquities end up in the wrong hands, including Colombian drug cartels..
.
Mt Vesuvius erupted recently in 1944. Fortunately, we sacrificed to the right Gods to prevent its eruption today. Who knows what tomorrow may bring?!
The city was populated by Egyptians, Greeks. Romans, Northern Africans, and several other cultures. Quite a melting pot. Quite a complex city, with many exotic and expensive villas, bakeries, bars, spas, and whore houses.
