There are moments when we feel a profound sense of fragmentation, as if parts of ourselves have been exiled into the deep wilderness of our unexplored interior. This sense of loss is often the echo of past wounds, a grief for the selves we could have been, and for those we have lost who never had the chance to embrace the difficult truths that lead to becoming a fully integrated, whole human being.
The journey to find and express one’s voice, particularly through the written word, can be one of the most fulfilling and gratifying creative activities available. It is a path of reclamation, a way to call home the scattered parts of our being and step into a more authentic existence.
The epilogue is for those who are ready to undertake that journey. It is a map for navigating the complex inner landscapes that often prevent us from speaking our truth. By exploring how to overcome personal trauma, integrate our shadow selves, embrace honesty, ground ourselves in the Earth, and channel our experiences into writing, you will discover how to unlock a voice that is uniquely and powerfully your own.
Overcoming Personal Trauma: The First Steps to Reclamation
Trauma, in its many forms, is often the primary reason our voices become silenced. It creates spinoffs, or exiles, of the self—parts of us sent away to protect the whole from overwhelming pain. I have grieved for these exiled selves, and I have grieved for the many who, trapped by their unhealed wounds, succumbed to despair. My own path to finding my voice was not linear; it was a descent into the underworld of my past and a slow, painful emergence.
Five years of hell ensued after a relapse following a severe leg injury, but I came out of it a wiser, if not more damaged, man. In 2017, I experienced the first of four panic attacks, triggered by a friend’s brain tumor diagnosis. This event unearthed a deep-seated fear and a torrent of unprocessed trauma. During a two-day panic attack, I begged my wife to carry my message to the world, fearing I would not survive. Her response was a turning point: “NO! Your message must be delivered by you, or not at all.”
And so, I started writing.
This is the first step: to acknowledge the wound and, instead of running from its terrifying symptoms, turn toward it. Traumatic wounding is a labyrinth, offering multitudes of distractions to keep us from the true source of our suffering. Writing becomes the thread that can lead us out. It allows us to witness our own pain, to give it form, and, in doing so, to begin to integrate it. The dark mass I had seen in my own energy field, a psychic representation of toxic cultural conditioning, disappeared once I began to write. This shows that the act of expression is not just cathartic; it is a powerful tool for transformation.
To find your voice, you must be willing to look at the parts of yourself you have denied. My wife, well-versed in Jungian psychology, relentlessly pecked away at the veneer I had created, a spiritual bypass that kept me aloof from the full spectrum of the human condition. It is a trap many fall into, especially in spiritual circles—the denial of our individual self and a refusal to look fully into our dark collective and individual nature.
This is where the concept of the “shadow self” becomes crucial. The shadow contains all the aspects of ourselves that we deem unacceptable: our anger, our fear, our shame. Patriarchy and ignorance, often disguised as spiritual wisdom, teach us to defeat the ego and deny our darker impulses. But the ego is not the enemy. It is a sacred container for the infinite spirit that we are, formed in response to a world that does not know how to love itself. It is the womb from which our transformation is born.
Instead of overcoming the ego, we must approach it with love and compassion. By doing so, we learn to deal with the collective ego of the world and the eight billion other individual egos. Finding your voice requires you to acknowledge and integrate your shadow. It means accepting that you are not just light, but also darkness, and that both are essential parts of your wholeness. This integration allows for a voice that is not one-dimensional or falsely enlightened, but one that is rich, complex, and deeply human.
True self-expression is rooted in unflinching honesty. It requires us to take a sword to every sacred cow, every idol, every received “truth” that keeps us from our authentic selves. What would Jesus do? He would take a whip to the money changers in the corrupted temples of his time. He even stated, “I come not to bring peace, but a sword!” This is a metaphor for the inner work required to find your voice. You must be willing to overturn the tables of your own inner temple, to challenge the beliefs that no longer serve you.
This commitment to truth can be terrifying. When my friend Marty, who was healing physically, chose to end his life, my world spun. I had invested my entire spirit in his healing, and his decision felt like a betrayal. “I need to be in control,” he told me, revealing a terror of death that was overwhelming him. This raw, painful honesty, though devastating, pointed to a deeper truth about the human condition and the complex nature of healing.
Your voice gains its power from this kind of radical honesty. It is the willingness to speak the unspeakable, to explore the contradictions and paradoxes of your experience. This is not about being needlessly provocative, but about being true to the complexities of your inner world. When your writing comes from this place, it resonates with a power that cannot be faked.
Our modern world encourages disconnection. We live indoors, separated from the Earth by rubber soles and concrete floors. This lifestyle contributes to a lack of connection with nature, which is the manifestation of our true ground. As an electrician, I learned that for any system to be safe and stable, it must be grounded to a common reference point. For electrical systems, that reference is zero volts. For human consciousness, the best spiritual reference point is also Mother Earth.
To be grounded is to remember our source. We are made of Earth stuff, and our bodies are a minute version of Her. When we connect with nature, our energetic frequency begins to change, resonating with the life force of the planet. I experienced this profoundly during a camping trip to Mt. Adams in 1992. My senses became heightened, and I felt as if I had grown roots into the ground. It was the experience of “all that I can see is myself,” a deep, mystical connection to the Earth.
Finding your voice requires this grounding. When you are ungrounded, you are susceptible to the chaotic energies and oppressive frequencies of a disconnected culture. Grounding provides stability and a reference point from which your truth can emerge. Walk barefoot on the grass. Spend time in nature. Feel your connection to the planet. This practice will not only stabilize your energy but also provide a deep, unshakable foundation for your creative expression.
Writing is the practical tool that brings all these elements together. It is the act of giving form to your trauma, a vessel for integrating your shadow, a medium for expressing your truth, and a way to document your connection to the ground of being. A daily journaling practice can be a powerful start. It is a space to explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment, a private laboratory for your burgeoning voice.
The poem “Love’s Reunion,” which arose from my healing experience around 1990, is an example of how the written word can document a profound inner shift. It captured a real-life experience of mending a broken heart and wedding my life to a higher, healing power. But being “one with God” is not always a stroll through heaven. There is always a crucifixion of sorts to be experienced, always a new search for truth. Writing allows you to navigate these crucifixions, to find meaning in the suffering, and to transmute pain into art.
The journey to find and express your voice is not easy. It demands courage, honesty, and a willingness to face the deepest parts of yourself. It is a healing journey that takes us to the very last day of our lives. Yet, it is the most rewarding endeavor one can undertake. Your unique voice, forged in the fires of your personal experience, is a gift. It is the message that only you can deliver.
I continue my intense inner journey, exploring human consciousness and lamenting the forces that prevent our healing and connection. But I remain hopeful. We each have the personal responsibility to create our own perfect conditions for recovery. Through self-awareness, personal inventory, spiritual practice, and writing, we can find our way back to our own “promised land.”
Now it is your turn.
Your story matters, and the world is waiting to hear it.

My wife Sharon on a Greek ferry, 2018
I stumbled over the frozen wilderness for oh, so long!
With a hole in my heart that life could just not fill
Until I stopped to rest, and heard a gentle voice singing a long forgotten song
That promised of my release from this winter world of I chill
Her lyrics spoke of the return of Life to freedom
And the release of shivering minds from darkness’ frozen, fearful hands
She drew me closer without any further verbal tethers
And prepared me for the walk back to Love’s now awakening lands
Her warming presence melted the icy hardness that I used to know
Inspiring within me the courage, to myself and my world, to say
That, to all of my past memories’ barren trees of lifeless knowledge, I now refuse to go
I will now accept only the lessons learned along Love’s Infinite Way
Yes, she met me while I was with the dark companion
But it was to her pleasure to take me home to share her loving lights
And give me the shelter of Love’s never setting summer sun
She changed my cold mourning into happier, heavenly nights!
By freely offering of herself and all of her sacred charms
She moves me through life’s clamorous valleys unto its silent peaks
I can now retire from a life of fruitless wanderings
To live in the Source of Peace of which mankind forever seeks
Her life is resplendent with Wisdom, Strength, and Beauty
For these are the robes with which she clothes her being
The gift of Love now unwraps before my inviting eyes
To reveal her ecstatic vision, which is now all-seeing
My search for Truth and Love Sublime has finally ended
For, I now fill my empty cup from her joyous running streams
I have reunited with my eternally fulfilling lover
And, her healing waters dissolve all of my painful dreams
I only seek to remain within her all-embracing arms
While through all life she extends her ever unfolding surprise
My first waking breath each morning brings the certainty
That, from my bed, joined as one, we again shall arise
My broken heart and shattered life is finally mending
And, wedded to her life, I now call her my faithful bride
Life no longer has a fearful road ahead to travel
For, One with God, on Love’s lighted path, I now gratefully stride
